How Long is a Dental Implant Procedure?

Posted .

For those that have not heard about “dental implants” or are looking for information, a “dental implant” is an artificial tooth, typically made out of a titanium screw that serves as a substitute for the root of a tooth. A titanium abutment connects to the titanium screw and a crown will either be cemented or screwed to the abutment.

Dental implants are highly reputable and have been a large success for many patients. Dental implants have been proven to be one of the most effective ways to replace a single, missing tooth. It is even possible for patients to get dental implants with multiple missing teeth and loosely fitting dentures.

Implant Procedure

Many may wonder how long a dental implant procedure may last. Simply, the procedure will vary from patient to patient. The timing of an implant procedure depends strictly on the nature of the patient’s case and the experience of the dentist. Both of these factors influence the efficiency of a dental implant procedure.

Once a dentist can properly evaluate a patient and give proper diagnosis for treatment, the amount of time that the procedure will take can be much better estimated. For instance, a patient that receives an extraction first and an implant immediately after in one sitting could take much longer than a patient who receives just one implant after a bone graft has already taken place.

Additional factors that may contribute to procedure time:
a) Number of implants– If multiple implants are being placed in one sitting this would undoubtedly increase the timing of an implant procedure
b) Professional skill– Not every dentist has the same efficiency and experience. Many dentists work at their own pace depending on the nature of their training and the experience they have with implants
