When Do Invisalign Attachments Come Off?

Posted .

Most patients that visit our office have heard of Invisalign. They know it involves clear aligner trays that can be removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing. Patients often prefer Invisalign to traditional metal braces so they can straighten their teeth and achieve attractive smiles in a discreet and comfortable manner.

Sometimes, we recommend attachments to Invisalign patients. When we first tell patients they could benefit from attachments, they are often confused because they don’t know what they are. Invisalign attachments are tiny bumps of bonding material that stick to the teeth. Since they are clear in color, they blend in with the enamel of the teeth, making them less noticeable than metal braces.

If we suggest attachments, you’ll need to keep them in your mouth when you eat or drink or practice oral hygiene. You will, however, still be able to remove your aligner trays every time you perform these tasks.

Attachments work like anchors that allow the aligner trays to move your teeth according to your treatment plan. They are usually necessary for patients who have more complex orthodontic cases and allow for greater results. By wearing them, patients can ensure their aligners apply the right amount of force in the right direction.

Once the teeth are done moving and have made their way to their proper positions, Invisalign attachments can be removed. For optimal results, they should not be removed before the orthodontic treatment has been completed.
