The Truth About Fluoride: Why It Still Matters

Posted .

Medical and dental experts widely agree that topical application of fluoride directly to the tooth helps prevent cavities and decay, neutralizes acidic bacteria in the mouth, and strengthens enamel. However, fluoride overexposure through its use in public water has become a growing concern for many of our patients at Costa Dentistry in Great Falls and Ashburn, VA. We’re here to summarize our recommendations on what’s the safest bet for you and your family.

Costa Dentists’ Opinion on Systemic vs. Topical Fluoride

Is Fluoride Toothpaste Necessary for Good Dental Health?

For most people, yes. The American Dental Association (ADA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) both recommend brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste to strengthen tooth enamel, repair early stages of tooth decay, and decrease the risk of cavities.

Should I Switch to Fluoride-Free Toothpaste?

Barring any sensitivities, fluoride remains the best supported option for preventing cavities. If you have questions about specific ingredients, schedule an appointment with your provider at Costa Dentistry in Great Falls or Ashburn, VA

What’s the Difference Between Fluoride and Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste?

Fluoride has decades of research backing its proven ability to prevent cavities. Hydroxyapatite toothpaste is a newer alternative that may help remineralize enamel, but there is less long-term research available on whether it’s suitable for daily use.

Is Fluoride Safe for Kids? When Should Children Start Using Fluoride Toothpaste?

Yes. The ADA and CDC recommend that children use fluoride toothpaste as soon as the first tooth appears, using only small amounts until the age of three, when they learn to spit the excess toothpaste after brushing. Small amounts of fluoride toothpaste are safe for toddlers and can help prevent cavities while minimizing the risk of swallowing too much toothpaste.
