What Happens During a Dental Cleaning?

Your appointment at Costa Dentistry covers everything your smile needs in one visit, while keeping you relaxed and comfortable:

1 Comfort Menu Options

We firmly believe that dental offices shouldn’t be scary. Select comfort items to use during your appointment! We want your experience to be as pleasant as possible.

2 Professional Cleaning

Your hygienist carefully removes plaque and tartar buildup from all surfaces of your teeth, including along and below the gumline where brushing and flossing can’t reach. Your teeth are then polished to remove surface stains.

3 Comprehensive Dental Exam

Your dentist examines your teeth, gums, and soft tissues for signs of cavities, cracks, worn restorations, and other concerns like gingivitis or periodontal disease. Digital X-rays and intraoral cameras may be used to give us a detailed view of areas not visible to the naked eye.

4 Fluoride Treatment or Dental Sealants*

Your dentist or hygienist may apply a professional fluoride treatment or recommend a dental sealant to provide additional protection against cavities. This is quick, painless, and particularly beneficial for children, patients with a higher cavity risk, and anyone with sensitivity.

*(When Recommended)

5 Personalized Guidance

We review your hygiene habits and offer practical recommendations to help you get the most out of your routine. Plus, we can discuss any cosmetic treatments you may be interested in.

Dental Cleaning FAQs

How often should I have a dental checkup?

You should visit the dentist every six months for a dental cleaning and exam. More frequent visits may be recommended depending on your oral health.

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day
  • Floss daily
  • Maintain a healthy diet
  • Continue to visit the dentist regularly

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral. It is found in water and in many foods, and it is often added to toothpaste. It is used as a preventive treatment in dentistry to help strengthen your teeth against tooth decay and other problems.

Yes, absolutely. Professional fluoride treatments are safe and beneficial for patients of all ages. The concentration used in a dental office is higher than what’s found in toothpaste or tap water, but the amount applied in a single treatment is very small and poses no health risk. Your dentist will let you know whether a fluoride treatment is recommended at each visit based on your cavity risk and oral health.

Sealants can last up to 10 years if you continue to maintain good oral hygiene and visit your dentist for regular checkups.

A typical cleaning and exam appointment takes about 60 minutes for most patients.

Most dental insurance plans cover two preventive cleanings and exams per year. We recommend checking with your insurance provider for the specifics of your plan. For patients without insurance, Costa Dentistry offers a membership plan that includes routine cleanings and exams, along with discounts on other treatments. Ask our team for details!
